As someone who is as much a Blockheads fan as an Ian Dury one, I am delighted with the album. If it only had the up-tempo funk blasters we know and love, how predictable would that be? OK those are the ones which stand out immediately, and I too wondered about some of the others. But listen to it a few more times (its the ONLY thing in my car at the moment) and other songs will grow on you. Having said all that, I have my own faves and less liked ones too of course. In order of preference: 1) Feel the Funk (cant beat it), Funny Farm, Spread It, Wheres the Party, Wish it was the Days - all as good as each other! (2) followed by Movin On, Work to the Bone, Bad Blood, My Own Rules, Mona (3) and finally Shut up and Dance and Sometimes, and Just Another Story. Theres none I dont like or skip over, but some that I keep going back to! I could get all muso on ya, but the only such comments I will make is as a sax player. I don't like the sharing of solo's which goes on in Feel the Funk and one or two other tracks, it takes away the flow of the thing for me and doesnt give either player a chance to shine. I am also struggling with some of the lovely subtle things in there, on sax and on guitar, as I think they're TOO subtle and dont get heard in the mix unless you're really listening. Great in one way, not enough in another! In summary - its classy, its sharp, it does them justice in their own right, which is whats I think everyone wants for them. I can't wait to see them do some of this on national TV next year! |
